If you or a loved one are facing wisdom teeth removal, understanding what to expect can ease anxiety and help ensure a smooth experience. At TruForm Surgery in Brighton, MI, our expert Michigan facial surgeons specialize in oral surgery, including wisdom tooth extraction, providing compassionate care tailored to each patient’s needs. Here’s a comprehensive guide on wisdom teeth removal-from why it’s necessary to aftercare tips for a comfortable recovery.

What Are Wisdom Teeth and When Is Removal Necessary?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, usually emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have enough space in their jaws to accommodate these teeth, many experience problems such as impaction, crowding, or infection. Wisdom teeth removal is often recommended to prevent complications like pain, damage to adjacent teeth, cysts, or gum disease.

Your oral surgeon at TruForm Surgery will evaluate your dental X-rays and overall oral health to determine if wisdom tooth extraction is necessary.

What to Expect Before the Procedure

Before your oral surgery appointment, you will have a consultation to discuss your medical history, current medications, and any concerns. Our team will explain the procedure, anesthesia options, and recovery process to prepare you fully.

It’s important to arrange for transportation home after the procedure, especially if sedation or general anesthesia is used. You may also receive preoperative instructions such as fasting guidelines.

The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process

On the day of the procedure, your surgeon will ensure you are comfortable and administer the appropriate anesthesia. The extraction process involves making a small incision in the gum if the tooth is impacted, removing the tooth, and then stitching the site if necessary.

At TruForm Surgery, our highly trained Michigan facial surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize discomfort and promote faster healing. The procedure typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity.

Aftercare and Recovery Tips

Proper aftercare for wisdom teeth is crucial to avoid complications and promote healing. Here are some key tips:

  • Manage Pain and Swelling: Use prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed. Apply ice packs to reduce swelling during the first 24 hours.
  • Rest: Take it easy for a few days and avoid strenuous activities.
  • Diet: Stick to soft foods and avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy items that may irritate the extraction site.
  • Oral Hygiene: Gently rinse your mouth with salt water starting 24 hours after surgery, but avoid vigorous rinsing or brushing near the extraction site initially.
  • Avoid Smoking or Using Straws: These can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket, a painful complication.

Our team at TruForm Surgery provides detailed aftercare instructions and is available to answer any questions during your recovery.
