What Is TMJ Treatment?
TMJ refers to the joints present in the jaw, which can become displaced or damaged. Dysfunction of the TMJ can lead to several recurring problems, including pain in the jaw and head, as well as having a hard time moving the mouth. Pain can also spread to the ears and shoulders. Dysfunction can be caused by injury, excessive grinding of the teeth, or other conditions like arthritis. TMJ dysfunction affects a large number of people, particularly women.
There are non-invasive options to treat TMJ, such as mouth guards and physical therapy, and these can be powerful tools. However, for some people, this just isn’t enough. We’re proud to say that we offer surgical options to address this problem and to provide you with long-lasting relief.

Learn MoreWho Is a Candidate for TMJ Treatment?
Almost everyone with TMJ dysfunction can benefit from some type of treatment, but not everyone is a good candidate for surgical procedures. Ideal candidates are in generally good health and either do not smoke or are willing to stop smoking around the time of the procedure. It’s also important for candidates to be open and honest with us about medical history, medication use, and expectations. This helps us make sure that you’re truly making the right decision for your health and your livelihood.
What to Expect During a TMJ Treatment
We’ll give you a detailed guide on how to prepare so you can feel at ease coming into the procedure. The type of treatment will affect preparation, which we’ll discuss with you during your consultation. If you’re being given general anesthesia, meaning you’ll be unconscious during the procedure, we’ll ask you to stop eating for a certain number of hours before coming in. We’ll also ask you to stop or adjust certain medications, especially blood thinners.
The procedures for treating TMJ vary greatly, depending on your desired results. During your consultation, we’ll tell you what to expect. It’s a good idea to have someone ready to drive you home and be with you during the initial days of your recovery. Patients can usually return home on the same day.
TMJ Treatment Aftercare
Aftercare for TMJ treatments can vary significantly, depending on the procedure. Generally, if you’re undergoing a surgical procedure, you should be prepared to take it easy for a few weeks. Exercise should be stopped during the initial recovery period. In many cases, you’ll need to be on a liquid diet for several days, and movement and solid foods should be avoided for several weeks. During your consultation, we’ll give you a detailed care plan so you can recover as smoothly as possible and enjoy your results.
